Tourism has grown at an accelerated pace over the last few decades and forecasts indicate an ever faster rate of growth into the new Millenium. One of the pillars of the tourism industry has been mankind's inherent desire to see and learn about the cultural identity of different parts of the world.
In domestic tourism, cultural heritage stimulates national pride in one's history. In international tourism, cultural heritage stimulates respect and understanding of other cultures and, as a consequence, promotes peace and understanding.

Every country has its own culture and national identity that sets it apart from other societies. It can be defined as the language, beliefs, values, and norms that combine to make up the way of life in any society. Travel has been made easier and more accessible over the years, now we are able to roam around the globe, meet new people and immerse ourselves in cultures completely different from our own. It provides an opportunity for cross-cultural exchange and it brings people together from different backgrounds, cultures, and traditions. Not only that, the tourism industry also drives economic growth and plays a major role in global economies.

While tourism can help preserve cultures, over-tourism can cause prominent negative effects such as the exploitation of natural and cultural resources, the destruction of historical monuments and the degradation of our environment.
What can we do to help preserve heritage and tradition?
It simply starts with awareness. A nation is able to preserve their culture and heritage through introducing it into education. Teaching the future generation the importance of their culture and heritage should be encouraged and guarded safely through knowledge. Besides, it is fundamental that tourism authorities study how best to develop these cultural heritage sites while protecting and preserving them for the long-term.
